Once a year, we purchase and distribute hardcopy dictionaries to elementary school students. |
Each month we patrol Kailua Beach to pick up trash. We have volunteered to assist the Genki Ala Wai Project. We volunteer to help care for our native forest at Hamakua Marsh State Wildlife Sanctuary. |
We Elks invented Flag Day and we celebrate it each year on 14 June. We visit local veterans and help them transition back to civilian life and cope with disabilities. |
Organize potluck dinners at our lodge. |
Every November, we invite kids to compete in The Elks National Hoop Shoot. We need volunteers to manage the competition. |
We help Oahu high schools start public speaking clubs. We teach the kids how to teach each other to become more effective communicators. Our first Gavel Club is at Kailua High School. The students named their club "Leo o mana" which is Hawaiian for "Voice of Power". |
We organize 6-man outrigger canoe activities for the military families stationed at the US Marine base in Kaneohe. |
Make suggestions and volunteer to help us move and build out our new lodge. |
Grade school dictionaries
Each year we give away over 500 paper dictionaries to local grade schoolers. This is what they said in 2022:
Many thanks to Frank Padilla for coordinating this program.
Public speaking club at kailua high
Leo o mana means "Voice of Power" in Hawaiian. It is the name that the students of Kailua High gave their public speaking club. To follow was the first installment of Leo o mana Spring 2023 semester. Elks Lecturing Knight Carl Kelley is introducing a new group of students to what the club has to offer. In essence, students learn effective verbal communication skills in order to grow their relationships and thereby lead more fulfilling and happy lives. After three weeks, the students take over and run the class like a Toastmasters International Club for the rest of the semester. If you are over 18 and want to improve your communication skills, visit https://www.toastmasters.org/
KAILUA BEACH CLEAN-UP
Once a month, we patrol Kailua's beautiful 2.5 mile beach looking for trash. We never find much, but it inspires others to be vigilant. The the gratitude of the on-lookers is a bonus.
